How to prepare for a newborn photo session: when to book, what to bring, keeping the baby warm and fed, and including brothers and sisters.
A newborn session should feel calm, not like an appointment to race to. A little preparation lets the baby set the pace and lets you enjoy it.
The short version
Get in touch before the birth, so the session can be planned around the baby's arrival
Feed the baby just before, or plan to feed during the session
Keep it warm: newborns sleep best when they are cosy
Allow time: breaks for feeding, changing and cuddles are part of the session
When to book
Newborn sessions usually take place in the first weeks after birth. Babies arrive when they choose, so write to us before the due date: we plan around it and adjust once the baby is here.
On the day
Feeding: a full, content baby sleeps more soundly. Feed shortly before, and feed again whenever needed.
Warmth: newborns feel the cold. At home, warm the room a little beforehand.
Clothes for the baby: something that opens easily at the front, so they can be undressed without waking up.
Clothes for you: simple, soft and comfortable, in plain colours; see What to wear.
What to bring
Feeding things, nappies and wipes
A change of clothes for the baby, and one for you
A favourite blanket or soother, if the baby has one
Brothers and sisters
Older children often love being part of it. Talk to them about it beforehand, bring a snack and something to keep them busy, and plan their photographs first, while they are fresh and before the baby needs a long sleep.
At home or in the studio
Both work. At home you have everything to hand and the baby is in familiar surroundings. In the studio everything is ready when you arrive. See Studio, home or outdoors.
