What to wear for a family, kids or maternity photo session: colours that go together, comfort first, and what to pack for little ones.
What you wear shapes the photographs more than almost anything else, and the best outfits are the ones you forget you are wearing. A few simple choices make a family look like a family in the pictures.
The short version
Coordinate, don't match: two or three colours that go together, not identical outfits
Soft, plain colours: avoid big logos, slogans and busy prints
Comfort first: clothes everyone can sit, run and cuddle in
Bring a spare: especially for little ones
Choosing colours
Pick a small palette and spread it across the family: one person in the strongest colour, the others in softer tones from the same family. Neutrals (cream, sand, grey, soft blue, olive) suit the studio, a home and the outdoors alike. Very bright colours and pure white can overpower faces and skin tones in the photographs.
Comfort is what shows
Children who are comfortable play, and children who play look like themselves. Choose soft fabrics, nothing scratchy, and nothing that needs constant adjusting. The same goes for the adults: if you feel good in it, it shows.
Outdoors
Shoes: something you can walk in on sand or grass, or bare feet on the beach
Layers: a cardigan or jacket for the wind on the coast, which picks up in the afternoon in summer
Season: see Best time for an outdoor session for the light and weather month by month
Little ones
A spare outfit, for the inevitable spill
A favourite toy or blanket: it calms, and it often ends up in the best picture
Snacks and water, and wipes
Maternity sessions
A dress or top that follows the bump, rather than hiding it, works in the studio and outdoors. Bring a second option if you like, and comfortable shoes for between photographs.
